Abstract
The implementation of English-only policy in the English classes at Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in Taiwan brings debates about the impacts of English-only instruction on students’ fluency and accuracy in English. The debate prompts the raising of the following research question. “What will be the suitable ways of teaching when students confront the dilemma between developing fluency and acquiring accuracy in English? “ This study, therefore, aims to answer the above question.
This study takes around six months in data collection. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used. Around 150 English major and non-English major students at Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages were invited to answer a questionnaire and nine participants were invited to join interviews. The process of data analysis includes the analysis of the data collected in both the quantitative questionnaire and the qualitative interviews.
This study finds that both English and Chinese are needed in EFL teaching at Wenzao in order to elicit a suitable way of solving the dilemma mentioned in the research question. Most participants agree that they prefer English-only teaching in listening and speaking courses; however, in reading, grammar and writing courses, most agree that both English and Chinese are needed. This study also finds that when some sophisticated terms, concepts and theories are taught in English and students get confused, they expect that the teachers are capable of offering clarification in simple English or offering Chinese explanation directly.
