Although many image restoration methods have been proposed recently, they do not result in a good reconstructed image when the missing region is large or contains lines and edges, because the direction of lines is not easy to predict. This paper proposes a line prediction method to predict the lines and edges in the missing regions. Furthermore, gray levels of pixels are usually smooth in images. Thus, smooth gray-level detection is proposed to restore the missing regions using the surrounded existing regions according to the smoothness of pixels in the image. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel image restoration method based on smooth gray-level detection, and a line prediction method. Experimental results reveal that the proposed method outperforms other methods.
