Anatomy of a Social Entrepreneur: An Exploratory Study into Developing the Key Competencies of Social Entrepreneurship in Graduate Management Education
This research produces a content analysis of a U.S. social entrepreneurship (SE)–focused graduate management program to identify characteristics of successful SE education, how SE key competencies are transmitted during that education, and how they are later practiced. This paper identifies previously proposed key competencies of social entrepreneurship, and determines to what extent they are being recognized and taught in the public-facing program documentation, which includes websites, social media, and curricula. Results show that social capitals are leveraged to provide the multiple avenues of support which work together to cultivate these key competencies and foster meaningful social entrepreneurship education. Four elements are crucial to engaging multiple stakeholders: an active and outward-facing institutional presence, a student-centered organization that bridges and links entrepreneurs, the integration of financial valuations and project support, and persistent external engagement. These findings provide a roadmap to guide management programs in creating knowledgeable and effective social entrepreneurs, and suggest that this multilevel approach is an appropriate stance to address the complex and pluralistic problems that lie at the core of social innovation projects.
