Shen Zhou (1427-1509) is a master from Ming Dynasty known for his outstanding talents in poetry, calligraphy and painting, while his writing capacity was often overlooked. Shen Zhou’s Kezuo xinwen (meaning news from guests) carries a refreshingly modernistic title that implies its content consists of scraps of stories gleaned from hearsay amongst his house guests, whereas it was actually added and compiled with Shen Zhou’s personal accounts and witnesses. Given the addition and deletion by busybodies, Kezuo xinwen comes in various editions when being printed. At the time, the widely known edition was the one with 22 scrolls. Today, what remains and has been passed on is the 11-scroll edition.
Kezuo xinwen contains miscellaneous unclassified content. This paper divides the content roughly into five categories: National Affairs, Filialness & Virtues, Dreams, Anecdotes and Daily Uses, of which Filialness & Virtues and Dreams account for the majority. This reflects such thoughts as ethical codes and action & retribution much upheld by Shen Zhou. Kezuo xinwen only collected, but did not verify historical sources of its content and was therefore criticized by Wang Shizhen(1526-1590) that it should not be classified as “Undocumented History (or Unofficial History).” However, the value of Kezuo xinwen lies not in recording conventional historical materials but in its concrete depiction of the everyday society and life south of Yangtze River. In particular, the three segments covering personal barbers, expellers of evil and threats of tigers can reflect realistic states in classes, occupations, families and ecology in the Mid-Ming Dynasty and serve as important cultural materials of daily life. Overall, Shen Zhou’s Kezuo xinwen secures a place in history by setting off two practices: first, to initiate the trend of using the word “News” (Xinwen); second, to prompt Literary Sketches into popularity.
