Abstract
Thai language has been categorized as a minor language in the foreign language education in Taiwan. However, the growing relationship between Thailand and Taiwan has enlightened the curiosity of Taiwanese learners and prompted the learning of Thai language to widespread in the recent decade in Taiwan. Under some circumstances, the challenges to Taiwanese learners of Thai language emerge more than obviously.
This research project conducted at a college of languages in the southern part of Taiwan by both a Taiwanese learner of Thai language who teaches English at the college, and a Thai language teacher from Bangkok, aims to explore the causes of the challenges to Taiwanese learners of Thai language and search a more suitable pedagogy for teaching Taiwanese learners Thai language.
The methods the researchers of this study implemented include both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data collection proceeded from September 2009 to January 2010 for a semester. The researchers conducted 4 in-depth interviews with a teacher and 3 students, and invited 61 students in four classes of Thai language to provide answers on a questionnaire. Also, the first author of this paper attended a level-one Thai language class taught by the second author for a whole semester to experience level-one Thai language learning and conduct class observation of Thai language teaching and learning.
This research project finds that Taiwanese learners of Thai language and the Thai language teacher share major similar opinions about the challenges to the Taiwanese learners and the teacher’s contributions to Thai language teaching, while expressing minor different opinions about the emphasis of teaching Thai alphabet writing. The pedagogy and class activities the Thai language teacher implemented from her experience as a TESOL Master made the Taiwanese learners with English learning background learn Thai language without much burden.
