Abstract
The differences of the main traits between English-speaking cultures and Asian cultures challenge the implementation of using such methods as leaner-centred strategies and Communicative Language Teaching on English learners of most Asian countries. Both Thai and Taiwanese learners face similar challenges. This paper elucidates how a Taiwanese English teacher experienced some native Thai speakers’ expression of English when he contacted them. It aims to interpret his observation about some Thai English learners’ English learning strategies. Personal observations and internet communication are the main methods of data collection from eight Thai English learners with different educational backgrounds. The data is analysed following the theory proposed in content analysis. This study finds that Thai people’s traditional attitude toward study helps them succeed in acquiring English reading proficiency, that the implementation of Communicative Language Teaching method might not acquire success in some Thai English classes, and that the experiences of coping with such similar challenges experienced in Taiwan may be helpful for Thai English learners
