[英文摘要] :
Curriculum Design to Enhance ESP Learning
I-Jane Janet Weng
Abstract
Whereas most learning occurs within the confines of a typical classroom setting in which behaviors of both teachers and students often become routine and automatic, by contrast, the field trip offers an opportunity for both teachers and learners to learn from the context which is integral to one’s cognition. Incorporating field trips into an English course for specific purpose is more likely to assist students to understand and retain the language and skills which are experienced, as well as to develop an alternative perspective. The challenge for English teachers of higher education is to design a field trip in which the students can have a lived experience which is qualitatively different from casual travel in which students focus only on their own interests. To fill the gap, this study discusses the strategies used to design and implement a field trip in a professional English course by applying the concept of experiential learning cycle proposed by Kolb (1984) as a pedagogical approach. It highlights the use of the field trip in a Tourism English course to facilitate both English learning and professional skills development through practical experience in situations where social reality was encountered, examined and understood.
Key words: field trip, English for Specific Purpose (ESP), professional English, experiential learning
