[英文摘要] :
In 2008, after Taiwan’s government signed “The Agreement of Cross-strait Travel of Chinese Residents Visiting Taiwan”, the number of Chinese tourists in Taiwan increased significantly. The new policy had a positive impact on hotel industry, yet it also brought about cross-cultural conflicts and misunderstanding between the staff and the international guests. A tool which can be used to assess and understand the intercultural competence of Taiwan’s hotel staff is valuable to understand the intercultural competence of hotel staff. An integrated research pilot project that was funded by Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages was developed in order to construct theory and understand the intercultural competence of Taiwan’s hotel staff. This would include developing a useful tool, specifically designed in understanding the intercultural competence of Taiwan’s hotel staff interacting in intercultural situations with international guests. In this integrated intercultural competence model, the dimension of multicultural personality traits was hypothesized to be positively related to intercultural effectiveness. In addition, two dimensions of intercultural competence which included intercultural personality traits and intercultural effectiveness would be combined to understand their correlation with organizational citizenship behaviors. Based on this theoretical model of intercultural competence, a Chinese-version measurement was generated. The face and content validity of the three measures were achieved by employing focus group interview methodology and a survey that was audited by experts. Subsequently, a stratified confirmative factor analysis method was adopted for testing items in each measurement and the assessment of the integrated model’s validity. Cronbach’s Alpha was performed in order to check the reliability and consistency of each construct. Samples were derived from 44 hotel practitioners in Taiwan. Results of the integrated intercultural competence revealed a good construct validity and concurrent reliability for each measure. Specific directions for follow-up research are posited.
