[英文摘要] :
In Taiwan’s hospitals, healthcare workers often encounter cultural and language barriers when they need to serve foreign patients. The same problems happen to the foreign medical interns who are studying and practicing medicine in Taiwan. To offer solutions for these barriers, a language university in Taiwan initiated a service-learning program to train college students to assist in improving the communication between the health care workers and the patients who came from different cultures. This study aims to explore student volunteers’ application of language skills while doing non-medical service-learning projects in hospitals. The 25 college volunteers were majoring in a variety of foreign language departments and had no formal background in healthcare. The semester-based service-learning program had six stages: investigation, preparation, action, reflection, demonstration, celebration, and sustainability. Each student volunteer had to finish a minimum of 18 service hours. They assisted hospital staff and senior volunteers with English and other languages to communicate with foreign patients of various nationalities. The study employed a mixed-methods research design, which included quantitative pre-test and post-test surveys, reflexive journals, and focus group interviews. Findings illustrated intercultural service-learning programs at community hospitals have the potential to increase language students’ language communication skills, improve intercultural competence and promote intercultural citizenship. This paper exemplifies that intercultural service-learning can be integrated locally and provides the opportunity for language learning and the development of intercultural competence through real-world and cross-cultural interactions.
