Abstract
Artificial Intelligence AI is a hot topic in the world. Taiwan is no exception, and it is being discussed at the Ministry of Education and other universities. It is clear that AI is being researched in many institutions of higher education and will continue to gain momentum in the years to come.
On the other hand, the use of generated AI, such as ChatGPT, in tests and reports has also become an issue. Harvard University in the U.S. and the University of Tokyo in Japan have issued warnings to their students about the use of generated AI. In Taiwan, the National Yang-Ming University of Technology issued a warning to students on May 23, 2023.
In the field of Japanese language education, it is becoming increasingly common for students to use ChatGPT to easily complete Japanese language reports and assignments. As a teacher, it is possible to prohibit students from using ChatGPT because it interferes with learning. However, it may be difficult in some classes to prohibit the use of smartphones except for tests, as learners nowadays do not have dictionaries and use their cell phones for everything.
At present, the use of ChatGPT in education is considered problematic in many areas, but in the future, there will be a seemingly contradictory trend to actively and skillfully use ChatGPT as a Japanese language support tool.
This study compares and examines, from a politeness perspective, Japanese e-mails written using ChatGPT 3.5, the free version of which has recently been viewed as problematic for students to use, and "proposal" business e-mails written by Taiwanese Japanese language learners in a university composition class. Through these studies, we hope to point out the advantages and problems of using ChatGPT in composition classes, and to suggest how to use it.
