[摘要] :
拼布所需的針黹活多半歸屬女性技藝領域，製作大量拼布時，往往也會聚合全村
女性共同拼接（piecing）作品，即是所謂的布聚會（quilting bee），海潔絲等人（Elaine
Hedges et al.）認為拼布聚會是個「喜宴般的聚會，藉此可鞏固友誼、重建女性社會繫
絆，同時交換情報和點子」（8）。拼布聚會的功用不僅止於此，尤其聚會的八卦閒談
更有助女性壓抑心胸的舒敞，女性因而在拼布與拼布聚會中尋出自己的柔滑空間，於
日常的溫從中找到反動的種子，女權概念自然也得以播撒。
本文因此試圖構築拼布技藝與十九世紀後半短篇故事解讀之互動平台。本文試圖
討論拼布與女性生活之間的鏈結，其次，本文研究兩篇美國文學十九世紀後期發表的
短篇故事，聚焦拼布聚會與期間的八卦絮語，透過聚會中「你一言我一語」的絮語中，
尤其透過女性與當地牧師相關議題之討論，隱約透露女性似乎也正挑戰教區牧師所代
表之公領域，並逐步劃出專屬自我的條紋畛域。
[英文摘要] :
Quilt and quilting are frequently associated with femininity and feminine techniques.
While making a huge quilt, women may get together for piecing and thus a quilting bee is
also formed. Elain Hedges et al. deem such a gathering offers opportunities for friendship
construction and information exchanges.
This paper attempts to construct an interactive platform between the quilt skill and
interpretation of stories of the late nineteenth century. We try to discuss the connection
between quilt and women’s daily life. Next, we study two stories published in the late
nineteenth century. We focus on the talk in quilt bees. In terms of the gossip exchanges,
especially the interaction between the female quilters and their domestic priests, we would
like to conclude that women were at the same time challenging the public domain
(represented by the priests) and little by little, demarcating a place of their own.
