This paper reports on the study in relation to the readability of reading texts retrieved from an assigned course book used in an intermediate-leveled language course in a language university located in southern Taiwan. It is common that publishers usually collect reading materials in the student book and the workbook. There were two folded purposes in this study: one was to investigate the reading ease as well as the grade level of the reading texts and the other was to examine if students from two different classes shared the same perception of the reading texts retrieved from the text book and the workbook. A group of 73 undergraduate students attended the questionnaire-based study with 65 students returning the completed questionnaire, yielding a return rate of 89%. Findings show that generally the texts were properly arranged in terms of reading ease and grade level; nevertheless, those appeared in the student workbook might have to be reconsidered. Results of this study may raise the essence of readability measurement before teachers make the final decision in selecting textbooks.
