This study aims to investigate to what extent a group of EFL freshmen perceived a digital, adaptive language test, Dynamic Placement Test (DPT). Since the institution the writer has been teaching has held an annual language proficiency test for several decades to assess students’ learning outcome and at the same time place students in a variety of ranges for different English courses, it is about time to evaluate whether an innovative and effective alternative should be considered to replace the traditional paper-based test. To explore the trendy DPT, 47 freshmen in a five-year junior college were involved. They took the 30-minute DPT in the beginning of the first semester as the pre-test followed by an in-built survey right after the test. This survey contained questions in relation to opinion questions about the DPT experience and open-ended questions. In the end of the second semester, the same participants took DPT again as the post-test. Findings showed that students revealed positive feedback toward the DPT and considered its features convenient and easy to use, yet they also reflected there were some weaknesses in this fancy device. This study may shed some insights for the institution and interested teachers in using a handy and time-saving alternation to assess language learners’ learning outcome.
