To understand a play – to find a role
The development of text work and role comprehension in the framework of a school theatre project in Taiwan
Abstract (English)
This qualitative study focuses on the preparation for role work and text comprehension by actors participating in a theatre project. The survey was carried out by using a questionaire and by group interviews. It examines the use of learning methods and tools concerning text comprehension and preparation for the role before and during the rehearsals. Another point of interest is the support by teachers. An evaluation of the results reveals the various forms of learning techniques and approaches being used. Before and during the rehearsals the learning methods and tools being applied were changed and modified. The reading of the Chinese translation and the discussion among the actors were the dominant approaches. Moreover it can be shown that in the course of the rehearsals the meaning of the play and of the own role finally became clear. The teachers starting to intervene during the rehearsals were considered by the most of actors as a useful source for ideas. But some of the actors were irritated by the suggestions of the teachers which were in contrast to their own views. Inspired by their experiences the actors were able to develop their own ideas for improving the theatre project.
