[英文摘要] :
Catholic colleges and universities have been putting effort to reform their governance structures as members of their founding religious orders age and drop out of campuses, according to a newly report by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU, 2023) and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGBUC). The report focuses on the various strategies used by university leaders to retain their mission and religious identity in the midst of this change. As indicated in the report, 90% of Catholic higher education institutions in the United States are founded by religious orders, whose members often serve as presidents, board trustees and faculty members. However, as religious orders age, despite efforts to recruit new members, the fact remains that the number of priests, sisters, and brothers across the country has declined sharply, statistics show that about 70% of the roughly 54,000 religious order members were age 70 or older in 2022, compared to just 7% almost 25 years ago (Holtschneider & Jalandoni, 2023). Indeed, this demographic shift in religious orders has, for some time now, had a serious impact not only on the governance structure of Catholic higher education institutions in the United States, but it is also a problem and challenge that is being faced by Catholic higher education in general around the globe, which relies on members of religious orders as its formal link to the Catholic Church. This study explores the educational practices of a university in Taiwan founded by the order of St. Ursula, whose mission aims to revitalize the founding spirit of the institution.
