Abstract
The analysis of listener responses (LR) in Taiwanese Spanish foreign language (SFL) learners is being a pioneer and fruitful field of research in the Analysis of Conversation. The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, this study will review and update the main theoretical contributions in LR carried out in the Chinese environment. Secondly, LR functions will be explored through an empirical, inductive and qualitative methodology. The study bases its findings on the analysis of a spoken corpus of 30 dyadic Spanish conversations conducted by 60 Taiwanese SFL learners of two different linguistic levels of SFL. The results provide new empirical evidence on the essential contribution of LR to second language oral interaction.
