[English Abstract] :
Our modern industry is based on a linear economic model (take-make-dispose). Large amounts of discarded products lead to rising volumes of waste across the globe. Moreover, we are facing a massive shortage of raw materials in the upcoming decades. According to an OECD report, the demand for raw materials will double by 2060. This will not only change global economic structures but also trigger environmental consequences. The biggest rise in resource consumption is expected in minerals, and the demand is mainly driven by fast-growing developing economies. Many Southeast Asian countries are experiencing fast economic growth. However, this growth is endangered by a projected shortage of raw materials.
In 2015, the European Commission adopted an ambitious Circular Economy Action Plan, which includes measures to stimulate Europe's transition towards a circular economy, generate new jobs, strengthen global competitiveness and simultaneously foster sustainable economic growth.
This paper seeks to assess and evaluate the European policies frameworks on the circular economy in regards to secure the raw material supply and evaluates the applicability in SE-Asia countries. While some countries already have started to adopt circular economy policies, many emerging economies in the region are lagging behind the development. This paper aims to raise awareness on how the circular economy could not only benefit the environment in SE-Asia but also support sustainable economic growth in the region.
