美國教育基金會 – 美國秋季教育展覽
I was a one-day interpreter for the Taiwan’s branch of American International Education Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is mostly to introduce and provide information about American universities for those who is interested to study abroad in the United States, as well as scholarship opportunities. This time, they were holding a Fall Season Education Fair in Han-Lai Hotel (漢來飯店), and were looking for part-time interpreters and volunteers.
I found out this internship opportunity when I was enjoying my summer vacation from a friend of mine. At first I was hesitating whether I should take this job or not. Since I am not a native Chinese speaker, I doubt my own interpreting ability. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to precisely do English-Chinese translation or vice versa. However, I decided to gather my confidence and went for the interview. When the interviewer found out that I am a foreign student, she also hesitated and asked me to introduce myself in Chinese, despite the fact that the interview should be in full English. Nevertheless, I was lucky enough to be accepted for the job.
I was assigned to be the interpreter of Berkeley University. I was quite surprised and honored since I know that it is one of the States’, if not the world’s, best university. However, to my disappointment, the Berkeley’s representative failed to show up and I ended up translating written information on booklets and brochures, leaving me to go solo on promoting Berkeley.
From this one-day internship, I learned more on how to communicate and convince customers on buying a product, especially in Chinese. It was really nice to see some students and parents left their personal information signaling that they’re interested on the products that I promote. I hope in the future I can have a similar chance to improve my interpreting and marketing skills at the same time.
