X Japan co-founder and drummer Yoshiki was back in the spotlight at last January’s 70th annual Golden Globe Awards. The classically trained pianist provided the theme song for the event, injecting rock theater stylings into a sweeping orchestrated piano piece that encapsulates the glamor of Hollywood’s history.

His involvement didn’t end in the recording studio – the 47-year old composer took the stage as a surprise guest to present the winner of the Best Original Score Motion Picture category, making him the first Japanese artist to help host the ceremony.

But this wasn’t his first time contributing to the event. Impressed by Yoshiki’s composition celebrating the 10th anniversary of Japan’s Emperor Akihito’s enthronement, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) asked him to write the theme for last year’s Golden Globe Awards. The HFPA invited him back, with an altruistic twist – the new theme has been released on iTunes, and all proceeds will go to selected charities.

After establishing his non-profit organization, Yoshiki Foundation America, that supports victims of the 2011 tsunami and earthquake, rubbing shoulders at gala events seems like the next logical career move for the glam rocker, both in terms of his music and philanthropy.
