Abstract
Free online websites have provided a variety of resources in English language teaching. Among them, TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a popular and insightful resource, but so far little research has focused on this field. This study, involving selected talks from TED-Talks as the core in a required course, aimed to present dynamic talks in relation to current issues as models to encourage confident presentation and to investigate the impact of TED-Talks on tertiary freshmen in terms of presentation. Forty-eight freshmen participated in this study. In-class activities were designed to fit learner difference, to develop confidence and presentation skills. Students were required to make their own 3-minute talk based on their real life experience or an introduction of a chosen topic from TED. This article outlines the rationale and describes the process of the project and the findings of students’ perception retrieved from 23 voluntary students. Positive feedback was gained in terms of environment, presentation strategies, and affectiveness. As educational materials can be accessed easily, it is hoped that this report can bring some insights to those who desire to expose students to a learning environment where both the academic performance and meaningful life attitude can be well developed.
