Scripts for Speech Contest

1. The Advantages of Learning a Foreign Language Nowadays

It is obvious that people who speak two or more languages prevail over those who are monolingual in the society. Here are some of the benefits of learning a foreign language nowadays.
First, you can communicate directly with foreigners. By meeting people from other countries, you can make new friends and see the world from a different view. You can also travel to places where that language is spoken. You will get a real sense of their daily life because you can understand what the locals are saying in their tongue. You will know their culture better as well.
Second, you can get more information written in different languages. Plenty of academic sources are found only in some certain language. If you master that foreign language, you are able to get firsthand information. Also, you can communicate with fellow students and researchers in the field.
Third, you can conduct business with companies where that language is spoken. Through the direct communication, you can eliminate misunderstandings and mistakes. On the other hand, most of the employers like to hire people who speak two or more languages. Knowledge of foreign languages can increase your chances of finding a new job. Also it may be easier for you to get a promotion or a transfer overseas.
Learn a foreign language while you are still young and you will soon get the advantages.

2. The Hero in My Life

In everyone’s life, there’s always an important person that can make a great impact on one’s whole life. This hero in my life is my mother. She gave birth to twins. And it is said that the intelligence quotient of twins is usually lower. This is just the situation I face. Though my mother didn’t hear of this theory when I was a baby, she still made a great effort to train my brain.
I was born in Taiwan, naturally I speak Chinese and Taiwanese. But I lived in Japan for three years since I was seven months old, so I actually spoke Japanese when I was little. On the other hand, my mother started to teach me English when I was one. This multiple language environment my mother gave, stimulated my brain. Learning in different fields, especially in language, became easier for me. Though I soon forgot how to speak Japanese after I came back to Taiwan, it is easier for me to learn it now. In addition, her love for language also passed to me.
Besides the language part, my mother also developed my music part. She played us classical music every night when I was little. Then she took me to several music lessons for kids. When I was six, my mother let me learn the piano. And at the age of eight, I started to learn the pipa. By means of music, she helped me develop my interest and also mold my personality.
There’s still a lot of things my mom influenced me that I can’t mention now. Through these help I come to have confidence in myself. And I also found my goal in life. This is all because my mother, the hero in my life.

3. My opinion over “Work Study”

I don’t think work study is a good idea because it is not a good way of learning things. Surely, there are advantages of work study, such as gaining experiences, earning money for tuition, reducing family financial burden, and so on. Here are some reasons why I oppose work study.
First, students can’t concentrate on either their study or work. They may not have enough time for their assignments after their work, especially if they have group reports. They won’t have time to study either. If students stay up late at night, they will be exhausted the next day, and they will do badly both at school and at work.
Second, students can’t get as much experience as they expect. They will lose the chance of getting knowledge from school because it is hard for them to concentrate in class. They will also lose the opportunity to join the social activities at school. Even worse they will lose the association with their classmates. Practice training from school is better than work study.
Third, students can’t earn money efficiently. The pay for work study is usually low. That is to say they have to spend more time for the money they want. They may not master the important skills from school for their future job this way, and that won’t benefit their job interview. If students study harder, they will not only gain their own knowledge but also win scholarships.
Work study is for those who have a lot of free time with few courses to take, or those who really need money to support the family. For most of the students, their job is to study hard, not to do the work study.
